BOCC Members,

As we welcome the 2024 cricket season, I am going to take a personal moment to remember the hard work and commitment of the gentlemen before me that allows us to enjoy playing cricket away from our homes. Not only play cricket but enjoy the amazing relationships we have endured over the years. For many of you, perhaps you cannot relate to this sentiment because you are new or uninitiated on the ways of the club.

Recent events have left me concerned about our ability to preserve our fields. We recognize that some of you are very busy to help us maintain our fields and clubs. But the one thing we do expect is demonstrating sensitivity to the efforts of others who are doing the good work. None of us adults are serious cricket players so stop taking yourself too seriously and help your skippers and fellow mates.

The fixtures secretary goes through enormous grind to schedule each game, find players when we are short, manage league schedules and field bookings. The least you can do is care about their effort and communicate effectively on your availability. Please pick up trash from the club house and empty it at the end of the day. Report on time for games. Not doing this is disrespecting your friends in the club. Understand the ethos of the club and be good ambassadors when playing at other fields. By not caring about these things, we undermine the efforts of people who do care, and we are pissing away an opportunity to play at these wonderful grounds, in some cases quite literally.

The club committee exists to give shape to the cricket aspirations of its members, young players and the larger community. We cannot do this without the cooperation and care from our constituent members. We have a large influx of young impressionable players joining the club. They will look up to us and behave exactly as we do. If you cannot conduct yourself in a manner consistent with the club ethos or you do not care about the importance of these aspects, you have the choice of leaving the club. If you see something wrong, do something about it if you can. Don’t wait on a committee member to do simple things that keep our fields and club in prime shape.

Have a great season and always THANK YOU! for all your support and partnership.
